Pilots, flight controllers and drivers aggressive and dangerous if they try to quit smoking or, better, if you are using a particular drug. According to the Federal Aviation Administration and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (two U.S. federal agencies similar to our Ministry of Transport) drivers of vehicles should not use varenicline, a drug in adjuvant therapy for smoking cessation. This medication has side effects such as, among others, to stimulate aggression and restlessness, in very severe cases it can manifest psychotic behavior. The news appeared on theheart.org.

The decision was taken in the United States after the publication of a report of the Institute for Safe Medication Practice which showed an increase of hostile behavior, aggression, fights, episodes of paranoia and even suicides among transport workers who began therapy with varenicline for smoking cessation.

“Since 2006, there were 227 attempted suicides, 397 diagnosis of psychosis, 525 cases of attacks in the third, 28 suicides, 60 cases subjects became paranoid, 55 individuals who claim to have hallucinations,” reads the report that refers to all workers in the field over there. “These data led us to suggest the discontinuation of this drug whose side effects, moreover, are already known to the regulatory agencies for some time. We felt this action necessary for the safety of our workers and the entire population” said Thomas J. More, one of the authors of the report.

Varenicline is a drug available in Italy. If you consult the help of the Italian Agency for the use of drugs may occur because the drug is long and varied list of side effects of this medicine in particular, is contraindicated for those with histories of psychiatric illness, for Pregnant and breastfeeding women and those suffering from kidney failure.
