Psychological SUPPORT GROUP

What it is: encounters with other people who are trying to quit smoking, which is made, where appropriate, group psychotherapy

How does: the comparison between the various experiences can be more confident, overcome the anxiety caused by abstinence and increase motivation to quit

Effectiveness: has definitely increased the chances to succeed and stay away from smoking even after some time. There is much more effective than individual psychological interventions and often drugs

Recommendations: Suitable for motivated people to quit their availability of time, not for those who are very busy and has no assurance of being able to attend meetings

The smoking addiction is characterized by the extreme difficulty in controlling and sometimes even to admit the compulsive need to smoke (craving phenomenon), it is this aspect can be shared by group members without shame and simultaneously monitored. Groups consists of a limited number of people (5-12), and is accessed by free choice. Through the group acquire specific information about practical solutions learned from direct experience, which usually are not derivable either from books or fishermen, or by charitable institutions. The self-help becomes a sort of small social system in which participants find themselves placed in a network of relationships in which they stop being of people with hardship and become active members of a community.

The role of the facilitator is to catalyze and channel of communication, for example, the more reserved members of the group to open up and facilitating an atmosphere of empathic listening, extreme tolerance and understanding towards the testimonies of others. Groups of self-help for smokers, the fundamental premise on which is the reason of the group is the common motivation to stop smoking. Only in this way it becomes possible to direct their efforts in one direction, making possible the full expression of the transformative potential of the group.

What it is: Meetings with a psychologist, or cycles of individual psychotherapy

How does: meetings focused primarily on behaviors related to smoking

Effectiveness: can help, but to a much more limited than group meetings

Recommendations: recommended for those who live far from organized media
